Effective Project Sponsorship badge

Project sponsors are the lynchpin of all projects – yet often they are thrown in without any guidance on what the role entails.  On this course, we approach a project from the perspective of the project sponsor. What are your specific accountabilities and how do you ensure that the project manager is delivering their end of the bargain? Participants will learn how to be effective sponsors, which questions to ask of their stakeholders, their role within a wider governance organisation, and how to critically review a project report.

Divided into two sessions, the first half looks at the fundamental principles of project management, but viewed through the eyes of the sponsor. The second half dives into the sponsor’s specific role on a project and their relationship with the project manager (and other stakeholders).

Session 1: The six key principles of project management

This session forms the basis for all project management.  The principles are simple to understand, yet incredibly powerful when it comes to successful project delivery.  We’ll look at:

  • Defining a project
    • Vision  – the context
    • Benefits – the why
    • Objectives – the how
  • Setting the benefits
  • Three Kinds of Service: Time, Cost and Quality
  • The Sponsor – PM relationship
    • The agreement between Sponsor and PM

Session 2: The role of the sponsor
In the second session, you’ll learn how to be an effective sponsor, which questions to ask of your stakeholders, your role within a wider governance organisation, and how to critically review a project report.  We’ll cover:

  • The project delivery organisation
    • The Project Board
    • Steering Groups – how and when to use them
    • The PMO
  • Working with your PM
    • Reviewing the plan
    • Reviewing the project report
    • Understanding risks and issues
    • Providing challenge & supportive leadership
  • What does a good sponsor look like?

Sounds incredible, right?
