The Shining Star two-day course equips your team with all the fundamental knowledge needed to deliver projects well and work effectively in project management environments.
Over the course of two days we’ll step through eight different sessions, each exploring a different element of project management. Day one covers the same content as the Rising Star course. Day two then goes on to cover:
What could go wrong? An introduction to risk management
Taking project planning and turning it on its head by looking at what will stop us achieving our aims. We love risk management, and by the end of this session, we think you will too. We’ll look at:
- Defining risk (what is and – importantly – is not a risk)
- The risk management cycle
- Proper risk analysis and mitigation
- Effective risk management
Your hidden weaponry – a project governance overview
Good project governance is vital to project success – but getting it wrong is so easy (and so common). This module will help you understand the major governance groups (e.g. PMO, Steering Groups, Project Boards) involved in projects, when and how to use them, as well as their key accountabilities.. We’ll look at:
- What is governance?
- Establishing governance
- Governance structures
- Reporting
Talk to the plan – effective project communications
Why are project communications often an afterthought? A lot of the tools are already there! Participants will learn how to effectively communicate about their projects. You will learn how to use the plan, reports, summaries, diagrams and other tools to communicate. We’ll look at:
- Types of project communication
- Who are you communicating with
- Different communications tools (and what they’re good for)
- Using the plan
- Talking about your project
Running the project – day-to-day project management
You’ve learnt the theory – but what happens when you actually get into a meeting room and have to run a project?! We’ll show you techniques of good day-to-day project management and delivery, including team meetings, task management, stakeholder management and a brief overview of how to deal with difficult people. We’ll look at:
- Establishing meetings
- The Project Meeting
- Key tools for managing your project
- Matrix management
- Beyond the meeting room
All in two days?! Surely, we can’t be serious?
We are serious. And don’t call us Shirley.
On the day
Each day typically runs from 09.30 to 16.30 and will incorporate a one-hour lunch break and a twenty-minute break between each of the morning and afternoon sessions. Refreshments are not included but may be provided by the client if desired.
