Effective Project Sponsorship - Online course badge

The nature of project sponsorship means that project sponsors are usually very busy people!  But while a lot of organisations insist on having qualified or well-trained project managers, we often ask people to sponsor projects with minimal guidance or support.

That’s where this course comes in.  We recognise that you might not have a huge amount of free time on your hands to devote to learning all about sponsorship, so we’ve designed a course that is short, punchy and to-the-point.  But it still manages to include loads of take-away tips and pointers to make you a better project sponsor.

By the end of the course, you’ll understand how to approach a project from the perspective of the project sponsor.  You’ll know about your specific accountabilities and how to ensure that the project manager is delivering as they should (as well as how to work brilliantly with your PM!)

The course is made up of 29 bite-sized videos with a total runtime of just over 90 minutes.  This means you can dip in and out at your own pace, or smash through the lot in a couple of lunchtimes!

The topics covered include:

  • Identifying project benefits and objectives
  • The Sponsor’s Gamble
  • Balancing time, cost and scope
  • Agreeing project baselines
  • Using the wider organisation to support delivery
  • How to run a Steering Group
  • The Sponsor/Project Manager relationship
  • Working with your PM
  • Reading project reports
  • Understanding and challenging project plans
  • What does a good sponsor look like?

Who is this suitable for?

If you’ve been asked to sponsor a project and you need some guidance on everything that involves, then you’re in the right place.  Perhaps you’ve been sponsoring projects for a while but without any real guidance, so you want to find out how you ‘should’ be doing it.  That’s great too.  No pre-work or prior knowledge is necessary so don’t worry if you’ve never sponsored a project before.

Can you give me a taste of what I’m getting?

That’s a reasonable question!  Of course you want to get a feel for the course before you buy!  Here’s a preview of one of the videos from the course talking about the relationship between the sponsor and the project manager.
